What Is Magic? Exploring The Impossible

In this article I present to you my video interview series called “What Is Magic?” Exploring the impossible ideas behind what magic is, what it may be and what it could be. Speaking to some of the worlds best magicians, this series of conversations with the likes of Las Vegas headliner, Teller (of duo act Penn & Teller) and John Steiner, we discuss “magic” from a philosophical point of view. This blog post and the videos that follow will challenge your idea of what magic is. At 38 (at the time of writing this), I’ve been learning and perfecting the art of magic since I was 12. Back when you’d need to open the Yellow Pages to find a magician to entertain at your event instead of trawl the internet vetting hundreds of social media accounts.

I do believe magic and magicians have far more to offer society than most realise. Even more than most magicians themselves realise. Magic is one of the (if not the only) art form of it’s kind where the audience both observes, interacts and participates in the performance. This and many other reasons (to explore in a future blog post perhaps) are why I believe magic and magicians offer society an experience far more powerful and profound than they care to appreciate.

What Is Magic? With Teller (of Penn & Teller)

As such, I decided to begin a series of conversation called “What Is Magic?” exploring the impossible ideas and concepts of magic with some of the worlds best and most successful magicians. Below are links to each video in the series. We’ll start strong with the most famous of the collection, Teller, whom famously performs silently with his duo counterpart, Penn. It’s quite uncommon for Teller to offer these kinds of interviews and I’m so proud to be one of the few exclusive places where you can hear Teller’s inner thoughts on what magic is.

Next we have Troy Magician. Troy had multiple television series in the UK on E4 and has since gone on to have great success performing around the world. Now for Mr John Mason, magic “super hobbyist”. In 2024 I was banned (blog post here) from the renowned Magic Circle for my YouTube content. John was a kind soul who reached out to me to offer support in what became quite a difficult and stressful event for me. I’ve since become good friends with John and I think you’ll find his elegant thoughts on magic quite interesting.

John Steiner is the epitome of a magician. Tall, handsome, well spoken, charming and very talented. He is one of my favourite magicians to watch perform and I first reached out to him around around 2019. I saw on his social media that he was performing in London and at the time I lived just a couple of hours train ride away in Leeds. I messaged John on instagram and we arranged to meet up. Later on I found out he’s actually in a relationship (now married) with popular Spanish fashion model and socialite Gala Gonzalez (impressive). What Is Magic? With Bob Arno

In the final episode in the “What Is Magic?” series exploring the impossible we come to Bob Arno. Often referred to as “The King of Pickpockets”. Bob has collaborated with intelligence agencies (and sometimes criminals) around the world in the field of personal security. A lesser known is the fact that Bob Arno is also a very knowledgeable magician. His stories predate the internet and they are really quite something to listen to.
